Notes | A large painted inscription under the number 10 on the (red-painted) back of the canvas implies this portrait was offered, presumably in the 19th century, as a gift to a British monarch, but perhaps declined (?). An additional mystery is that the Greenwich Hospital Collection once held a Vernon portrait described as 'Half length, after Charles Phillips [sic] - Presented by his descendant George John, fifth Lord Vernon, in 1838' (Naval Gallery catalogue, 1922 ed. p.48). This is neither in the NMM or known residual GH holdings but it must have been another version or copy of the present portrait (the only one known by Philips). There is a further 50 x 40 version at Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire (National Trust), which was the home of George John, 5th Baron Vernon, who in 1838 also presented GH with a marble copy by John Francis of Rysbrack's bust of the Admiral (see SCU0056).
