th this I padded out my knick-ers inside, and my shirt as well, though it was a clumsy job, for Icould not see what I was doing. Now,getting my largest dog, Doc, as bigas a wolf and weighing ninety-twopounds, I made him lie down, so thatI could cuddle round him. I then( *9 ) ADRIFT ON AN ICE-PAN wrapped the three skins around me,arranging them so that I could lie onone edge, while the other came justover my shoulders and head. My own breath collecting insidethe newly flayed skin must have hada soporific effect, for I was soon fastasleep. He hadnt been cuddled sowarm all winter, and he resented mymoving with low growls till he foundit wasnt another dog. ( 3o )

The icewas now all abroad, which I wassorry for, for there was a big safepan not twenty yards away from me.If I could have got on that, I mighthave killed my other dogs when thetime came, and with their coats Icould hope to hold out for two orthree days more, and with the foodand drink their bodies would offer ( 3i ) ADRIFT ON AN ICE-PAN me need not at least die of hungeror thirst. To tell the truth, they wereso big and strong I was half afraid totackle them with only a sheath-knifeon my small and unstable raft. But it was now freezing hard. Iknew the calm water betwee
