Caption on image says "looking east," and exact locations are hard to work out, but this is looking somewhere north of northeast, judging by the relative positions of various identifiable buildings. The Boston Block and First Methodist Episcopal Church line up pretty much as in File:Ruins of Dexter Horton Bank after Seattle fire of June 6, 1889 (CURTIS 1272).jpeg, but the present photo seems to be from farther away, so it must be from about King Street (which was where land ended in those days going south on Commercial Street (First Avenue South) or just west of it; south of that was tideflat.
