Le cours, réputé pour son abondante ressource piscicole, est né quelques km avant à 1 500 m, sur le plateau de la Margeride.

S’ensuit un long périple de 420 km qui voit la rivière, après avoir bordé l’Ardèche, traverser les départements de Haute-Loire, Puy de Dôme et Allier, où elle arrose ses 2 plus importantes agglomérations que sont Vichy et Moulins, longer le Cher et se jeter dans la Loire en aval de Nevers, Nièvre.
