Avhich is faithfully preserved as a patri-otic heritnge and place of pilgrimage for visitors fromall parts of the world. The steamboat lands at AV^ashingtons Avharf at thefoot of the bluff, Avhere he formerly loaded his bargeswith flour ground at his own mill, shipping most of itfrom Alexandria to the West Indies. The road fromthe wdiarf leads up a ravine cut diagonally in the faceof the bluff, directly to Washingtons tomb, and along-side the ravine are several weeping willows that werebrought from Napoleons grave at 8t. Helena. Wash-ingtons will directed that his tomb shall be built ofbrick, and it is a plain sipiari^ brick structure, withaAvide arched gateway in front and d(uible iron gates.Above is the inscription on a marble slab, Withinthis enclosure rests the remains of General GeorgeAVashington. In a chased vault at the rear are the remainsof numerous relatives, and in front of the tombmonuments are erected to several of them. Nomonument marks the hero, but carved upon thecoffin is the American coat-of-arms, with the singleword Washington. The road, farther ascending the bluff, passes theoriginal tomb, with the old tombstone antedatingWashington and bearing the words WashingtonFamily. This was the tomb, then containing theremains, which Lafayette visited in 1824, escorted bya military guard from Alexandria to Mount Vernon,paying homage to the dead amid salvos of cannonreverberating across the broad Potomac. It is around-topped and slightly elevated oven-shapedvault.
