MADRAZO No. 68 DON RAIMUNDO MADRAZO SPANISH (1841- ) AN OLD CHURCH IN SPAIN The scene shows the corner of a broad-flagged courtyard in Spain in fullsunshine from a cloudless sky. Deep in a dark recess of the wall is set ashrine, and an altar surmounted by a large cross. The walls are draped withheavy tapestry, and a pair of elaborate lanterns hang on either side of theopening. On the right a seller of rosaries is seated beside the table on whichare spread her wares, and a man stands beside her idly strumming a guitar.On the left is a bench on which sit a number of beggars of both sexes, oldcrones, blind and bandaged, all with outstretched hands, soliciting charityfrom the merciful. Two ladies, one in black, with a lace mantilla over herhead, the other in pink, walk slowly away, conversing as they go. Signed at the lower left, R. Madrazo. Height, M inches f length, Mi inches.

No. 64 HALT AT A RUSSIAN /A4 ADOLF 8CHREYEB GKBMAN (18S8-1699) HALT AT A RUSSIAN INN—WINTER Thk picture shows us a typical Russian country road-house, standing bleakand solitary in the lea of a belt of slender trees. The land is in the grip ofWinter, the ponds frozen over, the fit-Ids deep in snow, which has driftedand piled up against the walls of the stable. A heavily laden sled drawn bynine horses and guarded by a Cossack armed with a long spear has drivenalong the deep-rutted road and has drawn up in a flurry of snow before thestable-door, and the men are busy unharnessing the team. The inn is a rudeenough affair, with a long, low-thatched root, with heavy eaves, while thestable is of split logs, the interior showing dark through the doorway, whichis the only opening through which light and air can enter.
