Summary[edit]

Description
English: Diagram of annular type marine steam engine designed by Messrs. Maudsley. This type of engine used the same connection mechanism to the crankshaft as Maudslay's Siamese engine, but used one large annular cylinder wrapped around the crosshead instead of two cylinders either side. Text accompanying the above diagram in the original source is as follows:

"In this variety the piston is made in the form of a ring, a, a, encircling an inner cylinder, b. Two piston rods, c, c, communicate the reciprocating motion to the ... crosshead d, which descends into the inner cylinder, where it is joined to the lower end of the connecting rod. The latter slides between vertical guides on the face of the internal cylinder, the head of the connecting rod being in connection with the crank pin, as usual. The advantage to be derived from this arrangement is, that a long connecting rod is thereby obtained without unduly increasing the height of the paddle shaft."
