Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Benjamin Ward Appleton House, 88 Lincoln Parkway, Buffalo, New York, March 2020. Among the salient architectural features of this Mediterranean Revival-style residence are the trio of windows on the ground floor of the Lincoln Parkway façade, crowned in turn with round arches and bracketed pediments and matched by a similarly round-arched window on the second floor, with a faux voussoir above it supported by ancones. Moreover, the balcony at the centre of the façade sports an iron rail decorated with ovate and scroll patterns and a balcony whose large support brackets are decorated with scrolls and acanthus leaves in relief. The terra cotta ridge crests adorning the edges of the hipped shingle roof are a classic feature of the style too. Born to a wealthy family and educated in elite schools in both the U.S. and Europe, prominent businessman Benjamin Ward Appleton (1864-1927) worked briefly as an executive at the Buffalo Car Manufacturing Company before ascending to the presidency of the Thornton and Chester Milling Company. Subsequent owners included Charles A. Criqui (1865-1948), president of the Sterling Engine Company, who lived there from Appleton's death through his own. It's now owned by Medaille College and serves as the residence of the college president.
