In Allen County, 17 miles fromBowling Green, there is a wall of solidlimestone, 200 yards in length, 40 feethigh ; at its base, 30 feet thick, andat its summit, 6 feet. It crosses aneck formed of a curve in DrakesCreek, and shuts in a peninsula of about200 acres, elevated 100 feet above theriver. Upon the crown of this emi- nence, an area of three acres is sur»rounded by a wall and ditch, makingthe place a fortress of immense strength.Other strange ancient works, older thantradition, may be found in Warren,Spencer, Boone, La Rue, Montgomery,Barren, and Bourbon Counties. The Big Bone Licks of BooneCounty exhibit the great bones of theMastodon, and other extinct animals.Curious fossil remains are found inBourbon County. KENTUCKY. 325 The Mammoth Cave. varied as are the natural beauties andwonders in Kentucky, the most strangeand magnificent of them all remains yetto be seen in the weird halls and cham-bers of the famous Mammoth Cave. Route. Tourists from the Easterncities will reach the Mammoth Cave viaCincinnati and Louisville, and proceedthence by the Louisville and NashvilleRailway, and by stage. The railwaypasses, or will pass, within 10 miles ofthe cave. From the South and West,travellers will take the stage route fromNashville for Louisville, stopping atBells. Steamers ply on the GreenRiver from Louisville, to within a mileonly of the cave. The Mammoth Cave is in EdmonsonCounty, south of the centre of the State. Bells Hotel is the ante-room—thehead-quarters of its visitors.
