io degliadulti cenerino al disopra con fascie trasversali sul gastreo, i giovani superiormentebrunastri con strie scure allungate nelle parti inferiori. (ili Astori sono uccelli assai fieri e rapaci, dotati di volo rapido ed estrema-mente agile, si nutrono di colombi, di pernici, di anitre e di altri uccelli, arre-cando grandi danni ai Gallinacei ed alla selvaggina in generale, si cibano anchedi piccoli mammiferi e di insetti, ma sdegnano le carogne. Abitano tanto leforeste e le boscaglie, quanto laperta campagna vicina, sono molto sanguinarie dicesi che uccidano più vittime di quelle che non consumino. Erano moltoadoperati e stimati nellantica Falconeria. Nidificano sugli alberi alti, talora oc-cupando i nidi abbandonati dalle gazze, dalle cornacchie e da altri uccelli e videpongono da due a quattro uova bluastre o bianco verdastre senza macchie.Questo genere quasi cosmopolita abbraccia sessantatre specie, due sono proprieallEuropa ed unaltra forse vi giunse accidentalmente.
