Porcelain punch bowl, decorated in underglaze blue, overglaze enamels and gilding
Qing dynasty, c.1770
Large bowls like this were used to dispense a drink called punch, the name deriving from Hindi. Punch was a popular drink brought back from India to England by sailors and employees of the British East India Company in the early 17th century, and from there it was introduced to other European countries. The drink was a mixture of many ingredients, including spirits and fruit juice. Early on most punches were based on wine or brandy, and later rum, distilled from Jamaican sugar cane, became an increasingly popular base. Big export porcelain bowls to contain the beverage became fashionable from the 1750s onwards.
