English: Located near the French border, Tournai is one of the oldest Gallo-Roman towns in Belgium with Arlon and Tongres. First capital of the Frankish kingdom, it played an important historical, economic, religious and cultural role in the County of Flanders during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Belfry Built in the 12th century, the Belfry of Tournai (72 m high) is the oldest belfry in Belgium. The belfry served as a watchtower, as a prison, as a steeple, a clock tower, and as a town hall. It was the symbol of the municipal autonomy of Tournai and carefully preserved the charters that attest to it. |
