Summary[edit]

Description
English: Cage Crinoline

About 1868
Britain
Spring-steel hoops covered in linen

Ever widening skirts led to the introduction of the cage crinoline in 1856. It provided a welcome relief from the cumbersome layers of petticoats that ladies had previously worn to support their clothes. Crinolines were originally dome-shaped but they gradually flattened at the front in favour of a more pronounced silhouette behind.
