hipelago or broken waters thatform the communication between Hudsons Bay and the northern parts ofthe Pacific Ocean. The great range of mountains reached 47° or 48°; that partof the range west of the St Pierre was called the Shining Mountains, beingcovered with large crystals, and doubtless rich in gold and silver; while someof the nations farther west have gold so plenty among them that they maketheir most common utensils of it—supposed to be Mexican tribes thatescaped northward at the conquest. To the west of these mountains, whenexplored by future Columbuses or Raleighs, may be found other lakes, rivers,and countries, full fraught with all the necessaries or luxuries of life; andwhere future generations may find an asylum. The general summaries of Forsterand Fleurieu appeared before 1800; later ones werethose of Navarrete in 1802 and 1849, of Amoretti in1811, of Burney in 1813, of Lapie in 1821, of the NorthAmerican Review in 1839, and of Greenhow and Twissin 1846. Many maps might yet be cited to illustratehow slow were geographers to take full advantage ofnew discoveries; but no new theories were evolved,and errors were either the result of negligence orwere of local signification only.
