esy. The military and the civilauthorities showed their friendly interest on everyoccasion. At the Memorial Day exercises held in theAmerican cemetery, the Prefect, the Mayor, the FrenchGeneral, the Monsignor of the Cathedral and theFrench Protestant minister all took part. On theAmerican holidays the French always helped with thecelebrations and the hospital returned the courtesy onFrench national days. Captain A. Fondrevay, theliaison officer at the hospital was of great assistance tous and his kindly spirit made him beloved by all. The days in France, although many of them werehard, are still filled with happy memories. We shallnever forget the Christmas eves with their carol-singing through the wards nor the Christmas days on whichwe were made cheerful by giving others happiness.The delightful companionship, the visits to people inChateauroux, the leaves to the Riviera, Dinard, Aix leBains (called by the men aches and pains) Pau, andFaux Bonnes (Pas Bonne). 99 100 THE NEW YORK HOSPITAL IN FRANCE things, the petty trials and difficulties are now fadingfrom the memory, and in their place stand out the bigthings that really counted and made our adventure inFrance worth while. Yet we shall always remember the members of theorganization, who while there, were asked to make thesupreme sacrifice. Private Robert D. Lane, after ahard fight for life was taken from us on July 19th, 1918.He was buried in the beautiful American plot in thecemetery at Chateauroux. Every officer, nurse andenhsted man who was not on duty attended the service.He was loved by all. The other member of our Unit was Florence W.Campbell, A.N.C. She was on a leave at Nice whenshe contracted influenza and died. Her body rests inthe French Cemetery situated on a hill overlooking theblue Mediterranean. Her going was a distinct loss tothe Unit.
