    Summary

    [edit]
    Description
Moskalenko, Y. 2024. «Bathymetry modelling of the eastern Tendrivska Bay (Ukraine) using Sentinel-2 remote sensing data». English: A high-resolution bathymetric model of the eastern Tendrivska Bay was created on the basis of Sentinel-2 remote sensing data. For this purpose, the method of log-transformed spectral band ratios was applied (Stumpf et al. 2003; Casal et al. 2019). This method is based on the Beer–Bouguer–Lambert law, according to which, on the one hand, the intensity of absorption of radiation in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum increases exponentially with increasing water depth and, on the other hand, radiation with a longer wavelength is absorbed by water more strongly than radiation with a shorter wavelength. This law implies a linear relationship between water depth and the ratio of the logarithm of the intensity of light reflected from the water body in one spectral band to the logarithm of the intensity of reflected light in another spectral band. Using this relationship, together with a set of field-measured depth points for the bay and a set of Sentinel-2 remote sensing scenes, twelve models of the bay floor relief were obtained by means of regression analysis. The final bathymetric model was produced by averaging these twelve models. The upper part of the figure presents the bathymetric model of the eastern Tendrivska Bay with isobaths drawn at 0.5 m intervals. The lower part shows a hillshade representation of the bay floor, for which the vertical exaggeration or z-factor was set to 100. The resulting bathymetric model will be useful for improving hydrobiological and ornithological monitoring systems in the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve, as well as serving as a spatial variable for modelling the spatial distribution of aquatic organisms and waterfowl in the bay using machine-learning methods. In addition, given the high spatial resolution and vertical accuracy of this model, it is also of considerable value for understanding the geomorphological processes occurring in the bay. The process of developing this model and its analysis are presented in the following article: Moskalenko, Y. 2024. «Bathymetry modelling of the eastern Tendrivska Bay (Ukraine) using Sentinel-2 remote sensing data».
