Description
Deutsch: Im Frühjahr 1741 hatten verheerende Hochwässer bei Erfelden den Rheindamm brechen und das Wasser weit ins Land vordringen lassen. Die Folgen wurden anschaulich vom hessen-darmstädtischen Ingenieur Karge dokumentiert.

Zur unmittelbaren Lösung des Problems baute man den Landdeich neu auf und verstärkte ihn durch Faschinen. Geradezu visionär für die Zeit war aber Karges Plan zur dauerhaften Behebung der Hochwassergefahr für Stockstadt und Erfelden. Er plante einen Durchstich durch die engste Stelle der Flussschleife. Der Rhein würde durch den neu geschaffenen Kanal künftig an der Insel „Geyer“ vorbei geradeaus auf direktem Weg Richtung Rudelsheim fließen und könnte in der Schlinge keine Verwüstungen mehr anrichten.
