ng that as Kali was the goddess of murder andblood, she would naturally side with the party whichshed the most blood, and that honour certainly fell to theMission School boys. This decision pleased and comfortedus all. In the summer every boy has to bathe daily with his class.Those who cannot swim are placed under the care of swimmersuntil they themselves learn. Sometimes there are as manyas 300 boys in the water at once. At the end of the termthere is usually a long swim. About seventy boys take partin this. They are accompanied by a fleet of boats, in casethere should be need of rescuing. The ordinary long-distance swim is three or four miles across the Dal Lake.Some of the boys become such strong swimmers that theycan do eight or nine miles. One of the practical results ofthis swimming is the saving of life. In one year aloneeight lives were saved, and in two cases at great risk to therescuer. A medal is awarded in the school for especiallymeritorious cases of this kind (Plate 52).

THE KASHMIR MISSION SCHOOL 249 The following account, taken from a local paper, gives anillustration of the way in which the school influence isbrought to bear on superstition:— Any one who visits the city of Srinagar in Kashmir inthe summer-time and travels down the river between 6 and8 a.m. will see hundreds of the Hindu inhabitants disportingthemselves in the river, the older ones standing or squattingin shallow water at the ghats, combining their washing anddevotions, and the younger ones enjoying short swims.But one day in July this pleasant state of things ended, forit was reported that a crocodile had visited Srinagar and hadtaken a fancy for bathers; so from that day till the end ofAugust swimming and the like was stopped. Every onesaid they knew of people having been bitten, and many hadseen the monster, which, of course, grew more terrible as timewent on.
