| Description |
English: Bonhill Bridge. This photograph was taken from the grassy bank between the cycle path and the River Leven.
There was at one time a ford across the River Leven here, and, later, a ferry crossing. The first bridge was built in 1836; the toll that was imposed on those using the Bawbee Brig (as it was soon nicknamed) caused great resentment, and was not abolished until 59 years later; after only another three years, in 1898, that bridge was replaced with a second one, whose opening is commemorated on a nearby plaque: 1110872. The 1898 bridge, in turn, was replaced with a third Bonhill Bridge, the "rainbow bridge", which came into use in 1987; it is the one shown in this photograph. |
