MINING 231 Shafter mine near El Paso. Copper occurs in the Trans-Pecos, in the Red Beds country, and in the granite region.It has been estimated that the Red Beds alone containtwo billions of dollars of copper. What little has beenproduced has come from Van Horn. Some zinc and leadhave been taken out of Sierra Blanca, but the whole Trans-Pecos may be said to be still awaiting development. The newest and perhaps the most interesting enterprisein Texas is the mining of sulphur by the Frasch process atBryan Heights, near the mouth of the Brazos. The sulphuris under one of the coastal domes at a depth of a thousandfeet, and is thought to exist in very large quantities. Super-heated water to dissolve the sulphur is forced through pipesinto the deposit. The hot water with the dissolved sulphuris then pumped back into open-air bins, where the watercools and flows away, leaving a very pure sulphur as a solidprecipitate in huge blocks the size of the bins.
