Description
English: Destroyed German railway, Messines, Belgium, 1917. Diagonally across the picture is a trail of smashed wooden trestles and sleepers. Alongside this is the remnants of a path. The scarred landscape is visible in the background.

The derogatory term for a German, 'Boche', or 'Bosche' originates from the French slang 'alboche', which was two words 'Allemand' (German) and 'caboche' (pate, head) put together. The Battle of Messines Ridge (June 1917), commanded by General Plumer (1857-1932), was a successful relief of German pressure on the French Army.
