DescriptionBridge of Sighs Chester 392.jpg |
English: Looking west from Northgate Street, Chester, Cheshire down on to the Chester Canal. The bridge was constructed in 1793 to link the Northgate Gaol (on the left) to the chapel of the Bluecoat Hospital. It enabled prisoners condemned to execution to be taken securely to the Hospital's chapel to receive their last rites. It was christened the Bridge of Sighs after the Bridge of Sighs in Venice which had a similar purpose.
When in use, the bridge had tall iron railings on each side. |
