English: Sketch of San Francisco in 1849 by Ludvig Verner Helms. Helms briefly visited California on a Danish merchant ship, the Brig "Pantaloon" on an unsuccessful trade mission. The sketch was drawn from Flagstaff Hill, which no longer exists. Helms was a Danish adventurer, merchant, emissary, and author associated with the Far East, especially the Borneo Company in Sarawak. He published this sketch in 1882 in his book "Pioneering in the Far East". Helms dated the picture 1849, although his book records the journey in 1850.
