72 BRUXELLES A TRAVERS LES AGES. porte de Namur du xvme siècle, fait daprès nature par Vitzthumb, ne ressembleguère au fac-similé publié par M. Colinet daprès un dessin de la collection duduc dArenberg. Mais elle avait été dépouillée des ornements qui la recouvraientune centaine dannées auparavant. Faisant partie de la deuxième enceinte, entre la porte de Namur et la porte de Hal,sélevait la Grosse-Tour; entre les portes de Namur et de Louvain, la Tour-Bleue.

La porte de Namur en 1773.Dessin de Heins, daprès P. Vitzthumb. La Grosse-Tour (p. y5), dont le nom primitif était le Wollcndrics Toren (tour du Préaux Laines), située à lextrémité de la rue du Cygne, était de forme cylindrique. Ellemesurait 82 pieds de hauteur au-dessus des remparts. Son diamètre extérieur étaitde 29 pieds, et lépaisseur de ses murs de 6 1/2 pieds de France. Elle avait deuxétages, surmontés dune terrasse. Au sommet de cette tour se dressait la perchepour le tir annuel des arquebusiers et des archers. En temps de guerre on y plaçaitdes vedettes. M. Wauters nous apprend que de Lalande et dautres mathématiciensy déterminèrent le niveau de la mer. Cest également à lui que nous empruntons lesintéressants détails qui suivent : - Lingénieur Fisco proposa, en 1783, dutiliser ce bâtiment en y mettant deuxmoulins à vent, lun pour le blé, lautre pour lhuile.
