| Description | Three hours south of Córdoba are the remains of an old Al-Andalus town and the buildings later erected after the Reconquista that ended in 1492. The large Moorish fortress stands on the slopes of La Mota that dominates the city of Alcalá la Real. The fortress dates to the year 971 when it was built by the Umayyad caliph Al-Hakam II. Some of the preserved remains from several archeological digs include the abbatial church of Santa María la Mayor, a Gothic-Renaissance church of the 16th-17th centuries that was abandoned, like the rest of the site, in the 18th century, when the inhabitants moved to the plain where the town is today. |
