| Description |
Nederlands: Foto. Ook voor Nederlands-Indië brak rond 1870 de periode aan van het Modern Imperialisme. Westerse mogendheden stichtten koloniën in de (sub)tropen of breidden oudere vestigingen uit, terwijl het Westerse bedrijfsleven meer in deze streken investeerde. Door de opening van het Suezkanaal (1867) was het transport tussen Europa en de Oost goedkoper geworden. In de Archipel werd deze economische expansie vooral zichtbaar in het Gouvernement Sumatra's Oostkust, waar in die tijd de tabaksondernemingen (Deli tabak) in hoog tempo opgericht werden, later gevolgd door rubberplanters.
