| Description |
Nederlands: Repronegatief. Gedurende de 19e eeuw had Soerabaja langzaam maar zeker Batavia overvleugeld, althans in economisch opzicht. Deze ontwikkeling was aan het begin van die eeuw in gang gezet door Gouverneur-Generaal Daendels, die er de marinewerf en de 'constructiewinkel' vestigde. Onder het Cultuurstelsel (1830-1870) werd deze ontwikkeling versterkt omdat het achterland van Soerabaja steeds grotere hoeveelheden producten voor de Europese markt (suiker, koffie, later tabak en rubber) ging verbouwen. Het lag voor de hand dat in een dergelijke belangrijke exporthaven ook de bouw en de reparatie van stoomschepen tot ontwikkeling zouden komen. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
