| Description |
Nederlands: Negatief. Naast Koetai stond ook Boeloengan onder een 'zelfbestuurder', de Sultan van Boeloengan. Het sultanaat vormde het noordelijkste deel van Nederlands Borneo. Het rijk was een tijd lang ondergeschikt geweest aan Berau, het sultanaat dat tussen Koetai en Boeloengan in lag. Daarvoor was het schatplichtig geweest aan het zeeroverssultanaat Soeloe (nu behorend tot de Filippijnen). Boeloengan is tot de meeste geschiedenisboeken over de Archipel niet doorgedrongen en het Gouvernement toonde pas belangstelling toen er rond 1850 petroleum en steenkool gevonden werden. De Sultan draagt op de foto een uniform van het koloniaal bestuur. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
