Nederlands: Negatief. Java is niet bijzonder rijk aan delfstoffen. Wel zit er van alles een beetje in de grond, zoals goud, ijzer, mangaan en steenkool. Verder wordt er zand, grint, kalk, klei en marmer gewonnen. Van historisch belang was vooral de zwavel, die, met zoveel vulkanen, wel veel voorkwam. Zwavel is namelijk een van de bestanddelen van buskruit, de andere zijn salpeter en houtskool. De VOC bouwde dan ook al snel buskruitmolens te Batavia, die overigens met droevige regelmaat in de lucht vlogen. Al in de 17e eeuw probeert de VOC de Javanen zwavel te laten leveren. Dit was zwaar en smerig werk en de aanvoer wilde dan ook nog wel eens stokken. De hutten op de foto bevonden zich op 2.700 meter hoogte. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
