Description

O HMS SERPENT foi construído en Devonport en novembro de 1885 e botado o 10 de marzo de 1887. Pesaba 1.770 toneladas, cunhas dimensións de 225x13.6 pés, armado con 6 canóns de 6" e cinco tubos de torpedo de 14". Foi o primeiro barco da Royal Navy en usar o galvanizado para protexer os ferros metálicos da auga salgada.

Navegaba desde Plymouth, Inglaterra o sábado 8 de novembro de 1890 con dirección a Serra Leoa.

Durante a noite do luns 10 naufragou nos baixos de Punta Boi, preto do Cabo Vilán en plena Costa da Morte. Tres mariños do Serpent alcanzaron a vila de Camariñas, na provincia da Coruña feridos e totalmente exhaustos. Tras contar o ocorrido todo o pobo uniuse para ir ata a costa onde tivo lugar o naufraxio. Non houbo sinal de máis sobreviventes e á mañá seguinte non había nin rastro do buque Serpent. Pouco a pouco o mar foi devolvendo os cadáveres do resto da tripulación. En total faleceron 172 persoas, as cales foron enterradas no chamado "Cemiterio dos Ingleses" moi preto do lugar do naufraxio. A partir dese momento e durante anos, cando un barco da mariña inglesa pasaba preto dese lugar tiraba unhas salvas en memoria dos náufragos.

No Xardín de San Carlos da cidade da Coruña tamén hai unha placa na memoria destes mariños. Hai varias versións referentes ao ocorrido pero a versión oficial atribúe o naufraxio a un erro de navegación e ás condicións meteorolóxicas daquela noite.
