Description
English: Captain Franklin Lushington (circa 1710-1743)

The original of this portrait is noted in the 1961 'Preliminary Catalogue' as probably the picture then at Ashford Hall, Ludlow. This copy was presented to Greenwich Hospital before 1831 (GH272). [PvdM 7/11] Franklin Lushington was promoted lieutenant on 16 January 1728 in the ‘Phoenix’. Over the next ten years he had a series of appointments, before being made captain on 24 June 1739. In 1743 he was in command of the 70-gun ‘Burford’, part of Captain Charles Knowles’s squadron at the disastrous action against the Spanish settlement at La Guaira on 2 March 1743. During the fighting, Lushington lost a leg to chain shot, and he died a few days later. The given date of 23 February 1743 must be old style.
