Title |
Cast copper-alloy strap end |
||
Description |
English: Cast cu-alloy strap dating from the early medieval period, that is from the 9th century AD. The strap end can be attributed to Thomas' Class A, Type 2 (patterned). It is roughly eye-shaped with a tear- or drop-shaped terminal. There are two small rivet holes at the top and the top section was split to receive the end of the leather strap. The rivets would have held it in place. The reverse is plain but the obverse is decorated with a simple punched pattern, that is punched circles and semi-circles. There may be some niello inlay in the punched grooves. Thomas adds that these strap ends dominate the cheaper end of the strap end market and are characterised by non-representational, curvilinear and geometric patterns such as on this example. |
