Chinon (Indre-et-Loire) La forterresse. La tour d'Argenton. En 1477, le roi Louis XI confie la forteresse de Chinon à son biographe Philippe de Commynes, seigneur d’Argenton. Celui-ci renforce l’angle nord-ouest du château du Milieu en construisant une tour puissante, capable de résister aux nouvelles armes à poudre. Ses murs font cinq mètres d’épaisseur et des canonnières sont percées jusqu’au niveau le plus bas, à hauteur des fossés. Sa terrasse sommitale est située de plainpied avec la cour du château du Milieu : cette tour, moins haute que les autres, est ainsi moins fragile. Elle sert de prison au 17e siècle, comme en témoignent des graffiti sur les murs. Les fûts de bombarde (canons primitifs) disposés sur la terrasse sont des originaux datant de la fin du 16e siècle.
