Description

Cladonia grayi G. Merr. ex Sandst. Morphotype

Photograph of a herbarium specimen taken through a dissecting microscope (x16) showing the presence of small brown pycnidia or apothecia.   Assumed to be Cladonia grayi which is the most prevalent chemical variant of a complex that includes: C. chlorophaea, C. cryptochlorophaea, and C. merochlorophaea.

This specimen was growing on soil in a clearing N of Wards Chapel Road at the Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area, Owings Mills, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA (N 39o25.136',   W 76o50.717').
