Summary[edit]

Description
English: BLM employees and a volunteer removed trash from an illegal camp on public land in south-central Oregon, July 31, 2020. BLM photo: Lisa McNee

An illegal, abandoned camp on public land in south-central Oregon is almost all clean after the local Bureau of Land Management office removed 3,000 pounds of trash. Well, 2,860 pounds of trash so far. This past Friday, BLM employees and a volunteer returned to the illegal campsite in the Christmas Valley area with a trailer to remove significant amounts of wire fencing and large appliances like a refrigerator and washing machine. Two vehicles have also been removed from the abandoned camp since the cleanup effort began in February. A large mobile home trailer remains on the public land but will be removed once the local BLM office can find a tow company capable of removing it. Camping on BLM-managed public land is allowed for a maximum of 14 days within a 28-day period. The duration limit may be reached either through several separate visits or through 14 days of continuous overnight occupation during the nearly month-long period. After the 14th day of occupation, the camper must move outside of a 25-mile radius of the previous location. The purpose of this special rule is to prevent damage to sensitive resources caused by the continual use of any areas. Also, campers must not leave any personal property unattended for more than ten days. Illegal dumping on federally managed lands can lead to fines and restitution for clean-up costs, jail time, and even a ban from BLM public lands. To report a natural resource crime on BLM-managed public land, call 1-800-637-9152. In the event of an emergency, always call 911.
