Description
English: Coal tax obelisk, Nail No. 206, beside the railway and close to the Swanley Bypass in Swanley, Kent, England. See this image for context.

This particular type of Coal tax post, of granite obelisk design, dates from before the 1861 Act - posts of this design were installed on the side of railways, as opposed to the more common pillar design, installed more widely near roads and tracks following the 1861 Act - examples.

This particular example is at a slight angle (the photo is straight). Note the City of London coat of arms on the face - see this image.

In the foreground is a train and in the background we can see the overhead sign on the Swanley Bypass.)
