Description

Cover of the Illustrated London News (published on 28 June 1862), with an illustration depicting the bursting of the Fleet ditch and destruction of part of the Metropolitan Railway: scene of the accident.

Damage caused by the collapse of the Fleet ditch into the cutting of the Metropolitan Railway near Farringdon station in June 1862. Illustration shows the trench wall destroyed by the flooding and temporary support work overturned. After repairs, the railway opened in 1863.
