Nederlands: Slaginstrument. Deze trom werd waarschijnlijk gebruikt bij vodou ceremonies in Haïti.
Trommelritmes vormen de essentiële muzikale begeleiding van vodou ceremonies. De 'Lwa', de geestwezens, hebben elk hun ritme. De ritmes sturen de dansers en helpen ze in trance te raken. De trommels roepen de 'Lwa' op om naar de tempel af te dalen. Vodou is een officiëlle godsdienst van het land Haïti en is gebaseerd op West-Afrikaanse religies die door de slavernij in Haïti en andere Caraïbische landen terecht is gekomen. Tijdens de koloniale periode is deze religie gesyncretiseerd ('vermengd geraakt') met het christelijke geloof, vanwege de onderdrukking die er bestond jegens de religies van Afrikaanse oorsprong. De goden van de religie worden geuit als geestwezens en worden 'Lwa's' genoemd. De vele 'Lwa's' zijn ingedeeld in verschillende naties, waarvan de bekendste de 'Rada Lwa's', de koele, en de 'Petro Lwa's', de hete, zijn. De religie bestaat uit vele rituelen die geleid worden door priesters en die verbonden zijn aan de Lwa en aan de gunst die men verzoekt. Tijdens de rituelen kunnen de priesters in trance raken doordat de 'Lwa' bezit neemt van het lichaam. Hoewel vodou wereldwijd bekendheid heeft gekregen als voodoo heeft de religie niets te maken met de stereotypes van 'zwarte magie' die er over voodoo bestaan. Vodou is onderdeel van een grotere groep Afro-Amerikaanse/Afro-Caribische religies zoals Santería in Cuba, Obia/Obeah in Suriname, Jamaica en andere landen. |
