Description
English:
  • Photograph of the controls inside the cab of the William Crooks locomotive.
  • Overview: The controls inside the cab of the “William Crooks.” The open door at bottom leads to the firebox, into which wood was thrown. The long lever above the firebox is the throttle, which regulates the amount of steam sent to the cylinders. The enclosed tube left of the throttle is the sight glass, which indicates how much water is in the boiler. The ratcheted, floor-mounted lever at right is the Johnson bar, which controls the locomotive’s direction of movement. Notably absent from the cab is any kind of a brake. In the mid-19th Century, trains were slowed by the application of individual hand brakes on each car.
