DescriptionCormorants (or shags) below Pen Morfa - geograph.org.uk - 758136.jpg |
English: Cormorants (or shags) below Pen Morfa This view down into the bay between Pen Morfa and Trwyn Llwynog to the west reveals at least half a dozen cormorants (or shags) on the rocks.
The flowers of the sea pink or thrift are over and have faded in the late summer sunshine. NB Whats the difference between a shag and a cormorant? There is no consistent distinction apart from usage. The name shag was given to those with a crest. Shags and cormorants were distinguished either by behavioural or morphological characteristics but the two classifications didnt agree. Now, genetic analysis suggests shags and cormorants are not distinct groups; this research suggests all might best be included in the single genus, Phalacrocorax.
