President Of Lower Cape Club Believes Area Has Reached Bottom In Production By Clarence J. Hall Francis K. Kendrick of East Harwich says smallest growers may give up, but others will consolidate holdings. Perhaps typical of Cape Cod cranberry growers is Fl-ancis K. Kend- rick of East Harwich, Massachusetts, who is serving his second term as president of the Lower Cape Cod Cranberry Club. Mr. Kendrick does most of his own bog work, is able to turn his hand to a number of things such as devising cranberry equipment or working in wood with tools. Incidentally, he built his own home on Queen Anne's road. The lower Cape club has about 35 or 40 members and usually meets at the East Harwich Methodist Church which is only two doors from the home of Kendrick. The entire Cape has been declining in cranberry acreage in late years, but he believes this decline is at an end. "There may be fewer growers," he says, "and perhaps these with only an acre and a half ~ ~ ' " ' those who stay on will increase their as m.ueh. They may consolidate their will give up. But I think that acreage so there will be juii't as holdings." Owns Bogs In Four Towns Mr. Kendrick has a number of 'smiall piecels of bog m four towns — Harwiclh, Brewster, Orleans and Cha'tiham. Together they total 25 acres, but there are only 15 in good bearing. The boigs are along Queen Anne's road in East Har- wich adjacent to his house with the Chatham town line running through them; near Pleasant Biay in Brew- s'ter. O^tihers are in Orleante also rear Pleasanit Bay. His average crop is 500 barrels althoug<h he has picked as high as 1,000. All of his bogs have wimter flowage, but only two have com- plete frost coverage. These are bath in Chatham, one on Mill Pond, which has gravity flow and 'the other on Goose Pond which bas to be pumiped by gasoline en- gine. 'Mr. Kendrick does his own frost flowing. He isn't too much troubled by frosts, however, he says, as all his bogs are not in cold laodes and are located near fresih watei- p^onids wihich temper the climaite. Nearly All Blacks All bogs are set to Early Bilaoks, with the exception of two or three simiall setdtioTis whiicb are late Howes. Kendrick is a second generation grower, his late father, Rueben Kendrick also of East Harwich ihiavinig been a small grower. Ken- drick was born in Easit Harwiclh July 5, 1902 and attended the Har- wich schools. Started As Fisherman He starited his career as a com- mercial fisiherman. When he wtas 15 he firsit went out in his father's boat. But he has always been fa- miliar with cranberry growing. Hi's uncle 'the late Alonzo Nickerson of Harwidh wais also a grower. He finally owned bis own boat the Eleitha, named after his wife the former Eletha Sparrow of Easltham. This boat was of aibtout 30 foot in lengith and carried ^a crew of three besides Kendrick. She iput out from Wyclhmere Hiarlbor at Harwich and the fishing was off Monomoy Point, Chatham. She went
