English: Derelict amber mining equipment. Yantarny, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia.
There were massive amber mines inland from Palmnicken and Craxtepellen in German times, now flooded lakes. Coastal dredging must also have been carried out. So huge were the operations here in the 1930s that the mining was a common postcard theme for visitors to these wonderful beaches. Amber mining continued here until 2002 to some extent. The location of this monster was about 1 km south of Yantarniy, at the tiny former german seaside resort of Ostseebad Sorgenau (Pokrovskoye) Русский: Покровское,Янтарный.Yantarny |
