Summary[edit]

Description Native, cool season, perennial, erect herb to 1 m high tall. Roots grow to 5 cm long and end in fusiform tubers. Leaves 2–12, are linear to lanceolate, 9–65 cm long, 1–12 mm wide and surrounded by leaf fibres. Flowerheads are racemose, 20–100 cm long; sometimes branched, with long leafy bracts at the base of each branch; there is 1 flower per node. Flowers are usually chocolate scented, with 6–14 mm long, usually ± purple tepals. Anthers are usually purple with yellow appendages. Fruit are rounded capsules 4–8 mm wide. Flowering is in spring. Grows in forest, woodland and open country on a wide range of soils and aspects.
