terwards at the end ofeach year of the course. Other measurements were addedfrom time to time, and about twenty years later the listwas considerably extended. The tabulated results appearin the Anthropometric Manual published in 1887, and inthe revised editions of 1889, 1893, and 1900. The gift of a new gymnasium to Amherst College in1884,^y C. M. Pratt, of the class of 79, brought new andmuch-needed facilities, to which important additions havebeen made during the past twenty-five years; but the uniquecontribution of the college, and of Dr. Hitchcock himself,to the advancement of physical training in America wasmade in the two decades w^iich succeeded the trustee meet-ing of August, 1859. Dr. Hitchcock was chairman of themeeting in Brooklyn at which the American Association forthe Advancement of Physical Education was organized(November 27, 1885). He was also its first president, amember of the committee on statistics and measurements,and a frequent contributor to the early programs.

Twenty years after the first stones of Barrett Gymnasiumwere laid at Amherst, a structure ten times as costly wascompleted in Cambridge, Mass., and presented to HarvardCollege by one of its recent graduates. The selection andarrangement of apparatus and the details of system andmethod were left to the newly appointed director. Dr. Dud-ley Allen Sargent, a man whose stimulating and moldinginfluence upon physical training in American colleges in thenext few decades was to be more potent and more widelyfelt than any other that can be named. His interest in gym-nastics reached back to boyhood days, and during ten yearsof experience as a teacher in that field he had evolved certainunique plans of equipment and administration which werenow to be carried out under most favorable conditions.
