Summary[edit]

Description
English: Drawoff tunnel portal. Water is normally drawn off from Green Withens reservoir at an intake on the south bank, well above the actual bottom of the reservoir. It is carried in a 15 inch pipe running through a tunnel, which emerges at this portal at the head of Wolden Edge Clough.

The photograph was taken while contractors had temporarily removed the pipe to work in the tunnel. The tunnel is dangerous in places and is normally barred off by a locked gate, and in cany case must not be entered!

You can see the pipe where it crosses the valley lower down around SE000159 and it eventually enters the small reservoir at Spa Clough 850379. From here it can be diverted into Boothwood reservoir 509863, or via the Moss Moor catchwater 837949 into Ringstone Edge 52165. Both these reservoirs now normally serve parts of Huddersfield and Calder Valley via the treatment works at Fixby SE124199. If the reservoir needs to be drawn down further, there are scour valves buried 60 feet down operated from within the valve house 88595.
