Description
English: Dutch Men-of-War off a Jetty

A man-of-war is shown in the centre of the painting firing a salute. It flies the Dutch flag from the stern and masts and has the emblem of a golden sun on the stern. The sails of a second man-of-war are visible just behind it to the right and to the left a small states yacht emerges from behind the cannon smoke. Land is visible in the far distance on the left. In the central foreground a small rowing boat is moving towards the jetty, with two men on board. One man in the stern is rowing while the other holds fishing pots. On the jetty there are several figures positioned together with more fishing pots and an anchor. A small outcrop of rock rises up from the jetty, with two men on top. A small coastal craft is moored along the jetty, with red sails drying. In the foreground a small spar floats in the water on the left and a barrel on the right. The artist has signed the painting on the flag on the stern of the man-of-war.

Born in Hoorn, he was first a pupil of Abraham Liedts before moving to Amsterdam, where he became both the pupil and close imitator of Ludolf Bakhuizen. He probably moved back to Hoorn in about 1687.
