Title
Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Coin: Gilded Penny of Coenwulf
Description
English: A complete silver gilt penny of Coenwulf. East Anglian mint, Early group, c. 798, moneyer: Lul (North 1994, 94, ref. 362). Gilded Anglo-Saxon pennies are uncommon. Without any sign of a mounting for use as a brooch or pendant, for example, it is unclear why such pennies were gilded. A gilded penny of Cuthred of Kent (798-807), mint: Canterbury (probably), moneyer: Sigeberht, has been recorded from Ipsden Parish, Oxfordshire. See Portable Antiquities Scheme find: BERK-78D8C5.
