| Description | The Elgin Tower Building (1929). It was built for the Home National Bank, a major investor in downtown Elgin. They were also entrusted with maintaining the payroll for the Elgin National Watch Company. The fifteen-story structure was the city's first skyscraper, and was thought to be the dawning of a new era of prosperity for Elgin. Unfortunately, only months after it opened, the Great Depression struck, and Home National Bank went out of business in 1932. Thanks to a city-wide ban on commercial property construction during the Depression, the Elgin Tower was able to lease out 60% of its offices, including a Walgreen's on the first floor. The building was nearly filled to capacity through the 1950s, but began to decline as the city did in the 1960s as Elgin's relevance as a manufactuing center diminished. |
