DESCRIPTION
Photograph of the Ellis Hotel in Keene New Hampshire, located at 109 Main Street. The hotel was built in the 1830s and was first called the Workingmen's Hotel, kept by Elias Whitney. In 1837 the name was changed to Emerald House. In 1860, it operated under the name Union House and was kept by G.A. Goddard. John W. Starkey operated the hotel as the American House and sold it to L.W. Cummings in 1874 and was then called the City Hotel. There were other operators and then it was bought by Calvin H. Ellis in 1904 and given his name. It was razed in 1972.
