| DescriptionEngenho da Calheta 437.jpg |
Interior of Engenho da Calheta, the sugar cane processing factory in Calheta parish, Madeira. In the upper half of the picture are two mills for crushing the cane. The waste or bagasse falls down a chute and is removed by a conveyor belt below. This page claims that the machinery is 200 years old and runs on steam. But it is clear in this picture that the mills are electrically powered. But the site is certainly antiquated. The public are allowed to walk about it fairly freely. There is unprotected moving machinery and unprotected hot vessels. According to the bagasse article, the workers should be wearing face masks. A British health and safety inspector would take one look and shut the factory down instantly. Surely Portuguese regulations are equally stringent? |
